what makes you an atheist? (part 1)

a rather long bunch of personal thoughts of what makes an atheist, just a plain atheist, and not an evil atheist (this time)...

i always thought that "atheism" meant the complete lack of any belief in, or in any relation to, any religion, or any god, whatsoever. simple. right? maybe not, as I have noticed that a lot of people seem to think of atheism as some sort of substitute for a religion, that it somehow implies that you accept evolution and all the sciences without question and that you've read every book by that Dick Dawkins guy.

If that's the case, then I'm a terrible atheist for merely having merely a basic understanding of evolution and the sciences, in fact, I'd be much like a christian that never read the bible or went to church. And as for Dick Dawkins and other warriors for atheism, I would have never heard of any of them if i didn't stumble upon the myspaz religion and philosophy circus two years ago and having been exposed to the sheer volume of noise about them, I have ended up absorbing some of their stuff by osmosis.

But then again, I know more about religion than I do about atheism (what exactly do you need to know about atheism again?) so I am *not* so unaware of people's religions that I am under the impression that Joan of Ark was Noah's wife. yes, that's right, there are christians who believe that Joan of Ark, is the wife of Noah. In fact, I even think where I read this they even got the "Noah" bit wrong, as they referred to him as ... Moses...

I think the problem here is that the religious mob are, mistakenly, referring to atheism as a belief system, it is nothing of the sort, but the atheist crowd are letting that mistake happen, so much so that atheists are even playing into this stereotype that has been created.

Atheism to me, is the complete absence of acceptance OR denial of all religions and their various and sundry deities. I state that I neither concur with both sides of the argument as to outright declare that there is no god at all, is almost as arrogant as declaring that there must be a god, sarcastic almost.

Taking an absolute position about god, "yay" or "nay", is to claim absolute knowledge of the surety of some being that by all rights is completely beyond our comprehension anyway. I think that to have knowledge of god, any knowledge, is to pretend to be bit god-like yourself. I firmly believe that you just can't know either way.

My technical position on god is this, the judeo-christiatio-islameo god, is extremely unlikely, and if it really is *the* god, then I choose to not accept it as being worthy of worship. As for other gods, I don't really know enough about them to acknowledge their existence or reject them outright as being unworthy, but i'm pretty sure that they will all have some petty characteristic that is far more human-like than god-like that would make me question their "god" status.

If there really is a god, it's a safe bet we've all got it wrong somehow, so in fact, would not choosing a "religion" actually be the safest thing to do if you really are worried about your immortal soul? then you can just say "hey look big guy, none of those religions made any actual sense, and I choose to not follow anything that does not make sense. That's why you gave us a brain, right?"

The easiest way to follow the first commandment, "thou shalt not have any gods before me", is to not follow *any* god or even have a position on god at all, this way you remove the extremely likely possibility that you are worshipping a false god! Don't want to break that first commandment now do we?

I like to think of atheism in much the same way as you or I would think about the concept of "me" - you are always "me" from your point of view, and I am always "me" from my point. But you just don't think about yourself as the plain old being of "me" very much do you? it's always "I am something" or "I want something" or "I need something".

Every thing else that gives us definition, all the "I ams" and "I wants" etc, are added later on to this "me" character that you are. The clothes you wear (I wear..), the people that you associate with (I am friends with), the religion you follow (I believe..) ... it's ALL added, and most of it is given so early on that it seems to be all that you know, aka indoctrination.

but you don't add anything to your character that makes you an atheist, do you?

So you don't technically become an atheist, you un-believe the religious brain washing, you have to stop being so Islame, you have to un-Jayzus your thinking, you gotta suppress thoughts about the hannuka draydel, you let those notions of your particular god and religion go. Then when you have thrown away all the religion and all the god stuff, you are merely left with your *natural* state, an atheist.

Who cares if god exists? (religiorant)

"oh no" you're saying, "another god blog", it's like an obsession for me, but I've found that it was necessary to do all of this to scrub the catholic fear of god out of me, but ask yourself this...

what is the difference if there is a god or not?

a) there is a god: you live your life as best as you can, treat people how you want them to treat you
b) there is *no* god: you live your life as best as you can, treat people how you want them to treat you

there's a bible for *everyone*... and there can be a hymn section in the back with just this little diddy

Do what you do do well boy,
do what you do do well
give your love and all of your heart,
and do what you do do well

keep singing that one in your mind over and over

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.
--Marcus Aurelius

the last of the good emperors of Rome was really onto something there....

this is the point i am at, god does not matter, how much more should I have done? ate some crackers? drank some wine? said "Jesus is my lord"? said a prayer to a god that hasn't shown hide nor hair in millennia? denounce Satan? The only way I could be better is to give away my possessions, but in a selfish world that would leave me with nothing at all and I'd be out on the street begging.

But why do religious people need to source their morals from the ether? Religious people scare the FRAK out of me when they say shit like their lives only have meaning because of how they worship their lord, I'm like...

"Fucking what? You can not be a good person without Jesus in your heart? what dar faarkk???... Well you just keep on reading that bible of yours sonny jim because if you don't, then stay the fuck away from me because you are barely sane as it is!!"

Is this why they don't want science to keep knocking god down a notch on the fantastic scale by figuring out the universe? Is god/jesus the only thing keeping the entire christian population from running amok?

Imagine that woman, the DARK SIDED screamer, you know the one I'm talking about,
she's dark sided alright! consumed she is! if she didn't have Jesus in her heart I swear she should turn into a demon something like that frikking Balrog monster underneath Khazad-Dum in the Lord of the Rings

and would the world be fucked up with that thing running around without Jesus keeping that thing in line or what?

but of course they are lying when they say things like this, aren't they?... Can't be good without Jesus? what a load of crock, because we all know people can be good people without having a Jesus label pinned to their hearts, or any label for that matter.. I've no doubt that dark sided woman would be totally different if she didn't have a Jesus psychosis...

the religious fruitcake types just can't admit to themselves that they *can* be good without a god, they don't have the courage, they fear the unknown...

Fear is the path to the Dark Side
--Yoda

the unknown is exciting, and no, it's not always safe, but to fear the unknown is to deny human nature of being curious... we should all be calling ourselves "Earthlings", we should be digging up the asteroid belt right now with our remote controlled robots sending back iron ore, water, and whatever else we find out there.. Star Trek is set in the 2300s, at the rate we are going, it'll be the 23000s before we get off this rock...

There's a star man waiting in the sky,
he'd like to come and meet us
but he thinks he'll blow our minds

--David Bowie

Satan died on the cross for your sins... (religiohumour)

Did Satan die on the cross?

Why are christians *so* sure that this Jesus dude they have chosen to worship, isn't Satan himself?

After all.. the fundies keep saying that Satan is the great deceiver... they keep saying Satan apparently is *still* down here leading us all astray.. and yet when confronted with this possibility that Jesus is Satan, the fundy suddenly says "but the bible is *true*!!" .. "I've read the bible so it must be true" is something I've read as a "reason" for the bible to be true. Because they read it, held it in their hands, and read it, so it's real. it *must* be true.

i mean sure the general gist of what the bible was supposed to be about is probably still there but people take half lines of the bible to justify their bigotry - it *must* be true - so who is to say that Satan didn't pretend to be this Jesus guy and die on the cross to gain "sympathy for the devil" by pretending to be... the messiah?

And to piss god off even more, Satan showed god that he could be a better and kinder "god" giving an even better way for god's creatures to live. ie. "do unto others" as opposed to "an eye for an eye" ...

Have a think about this, the god of the old testament is a brutal, vengeful and jealous being, right?

Most christians, if not all, will claim their god of the old testament to be perfect, so what's with the back flip with Jesus and christianity?

The old testament god is the Jewish god right? And yet, that didn't work out very well did it, because god then had to send this Jesus guy along. But what perfect god would not give us the right religion in the first place? If this god was perfect we'd all be Jewish, right?

The old testament god, would seem to be a bit more like... Allah.. what do you think?

so what happened between the old testament god and the apparent resurrection of the old testament god with the rise of Islame?

Jesus...

and doesn't Jesus just seem to be such a massive departure from old testament things like "an eye for an eye", and things like stoning people to death for committing adultery? Sounds way out of character for a "perfect" being, as that's what a perfect god is supposed to be, it's perfect the way it is, it doesn't change, it doesn't need to change it's ways, it's perfect already.

So given a "perfect" god, there wasn't really any need for a "perfect" god to send his son Jesus was there?

It's Lucifer!

Lucifer was the "most perfect" of the angels, but god didn't like that Lucifer was so handsome, (stupid god for making him that way, hey?) so god sends Lucifer to go and watch over the earth and its people with a third of the angels so god doesn't have to look at his cherub handsome face anymore.

but perhaps while watching over us, Lucifer became attached to us people down here, and voiced his opinion that these humans were not so bad as to deserve being wiped out in the flood except for the handful few that still believed in the brutal god.

Maybe when Lucifer attacked heaven the first time he was attempting to stop god from sending another flood or similar disaster to wipe us all out again and was cast out to then become "Satan"?

was Satan the first being to consciously reject god because god was treating his creation like we were some sort of experiment or amusement?

did Satan fuck up god's plan by playing the part of Jesus Christ? did he "lead us astray" from the brutal god of the old testament that seems to be very much alive within Islam?

do we need to believe in god?

when i say "god" in this context, i mean like a religious god like Admiral "Allah" Ackbar, Jewhova or Cheezuz...

but are we finally leaving these traditions of the anachronistic and outdated biblical past, *in* the past and moving forward? or will we perpetually have progress retarded by religious morons forever?

These basic traditions of right and wrong were laid down centuries, even millennia ago, when things were more easily defined as black or white, right or wrong, and i'm not saying abandon those teachings completely, but we're a lot smarter than that these days, thanks to technology and understanding, we *can* safely change the course of our lives and extend them or make them tolerable and in some cases fix our problems completely.

but why is it that people need to believe in god, is it to make sure that the sun rises each day? because that's pretty much one of the few things that is ultimately out of our control, at least for the moment.

is it really that thing called "gravity" keeping you in place on the surface of the earth? instead of being flung off into oblivion even though we are hurtling through space at thousands of kilometers an hour?

is gravity the believers' reward for being a good person? meaning to say that if we sin too much, will god disable gravity and fling us off into space?

maybe the idea of god looking over most people's shoulders at all times is the only thing keeping the religidiots from being the brutal savages they too often accuse non-believers of being?

It is our duty to think God out of existence....

a quote from the movie, Bad Boy Bubby....

You see, no one's going to help you Bubby, because there isn't anybody out there to do it.

No one.

We're all just complicated arrangements of atoms and subatomic particles - we don't live.

But our atoms do move about in such a way as to give us identity and consciousness.

We don't die; our atoms just rearrange themselves.

There is no God. There can be no God; it's ridiculous to think in terms of a superior being.

An inferior being, maybe, because we, we who don't even exist, we arrange our lives with more order and harmony than God ever arranged the earth.

We measure; we plot; we create wonderful new things. We are the architects of our own existence.

What a lunatic concept to bow down before a God who slaughters millions of innocent children, slowly and agonisingly starves them to death, beats them, tortures them, rejects them.

What folly to even think that we should not insult such a God, damn him, think him out of existence.

It is our duty to think God out of existence.

It is our duty to insult him.

Fuck you, God!

Strike me down if you dare, you tyrant, you non-existent fraud!

It is the duty of all human beings to think God out of existence.

Then we have a future.

Because then - and only then - do we take full responsibility for who we are.

And that's what you must do, Bubby: think God out of existence; take responsibility for who you are.

US christians: if gays are an abomination then so is your national symbol...

US christians: if gays are an abomination then so is your national symbol...

if gays are an abomination, as some christians so loudly and so proudly and so frequently claim, then using the same book from the bible where they get that gay idea in the first place, isn't the USA itself an abomination for having an Eagle as it's national symbol?

So if gays are some sort of abomination:

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination.

Then the eagle is also an abomination.

Which thing is more in the faces of US christians than the other? Their "National Symbol", or gays "being gay"?

In my entire life, I once saw two guys kissing, that was slightly disturbing, but it was the *only* time someone being gay was in my face with their gayness. So it would be fair to say that gays being in my face with their gayness isn't a problem for me where I live, however I've often seen images from proud Americans displaying their national pride by displaying a Bald Eagle often draped in the USA flag on myspaz.

And yet, the christian complaint about gays, that I've often heard, head over to myspaz and ask them if you need convincing, is that christians don't want to see "it", with "it" being gay people being gay, because according to the bible, it's an abomination to some dude called god...

oh what's that i hear? but *eating* eagles is the actual abomination not the *eagles* themselves?

so given that there is some leeway in this liberal biblical interpretation, should that not mean that gays aren't the abomination either, but rather it's the act of gay sex that's the abomination, right, and not gays themselves, right?? well?

According to the Book of Leviticus: If gays are an abomination for having gay abomination sex, as clearly demonstrated as being the belief of many christians on many occasions over on myspaz, then the USA must also be an abomination for openly and willingly choosing an abomination, the eagle, as it's national icon. I mean what good bible following christian would think otherwise?

so any US christian bitching about something that is supposedly in their faces all the time, surely doesn't know that their internationally recognised national symbol is also an abomination, as I seriously doubt that gays are in your face more than the Bald Eagle of your national emblem is in your face. So why make a big deal of gays defiling the sanctity of your precious bible when the exact same thing should be regarded towards the USA's national symbol?

and no doubt that no matter how many reasons bigoted people are shown that gays are human beings, those people will still think gays are an abomination, well then I say to them "so frakking what anyway?"

we heard you the first MILLION times, by the way, so put a sock in it already, if it's a sin, OK, that's nice mr and mrs christian, but, it's *your* sin, if you don't like it, then don't do it, don't look at it, don't speculate that some effeminate looking man is a homo, don't speculate that some butch looking woman is a dyke, just get the frack over it and mind your Sweet Jesus lovin' business..

if it's really a sin and you really are correct in your beliefs, and gays and non-believers really are going to hell, then that's between us heathens and this Jesus/god you keep going on about who supposedly loves us all, so it's NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS *anyway* regardless of how you've twisted your religion to justify your hatred and bigotry ...

oh what's that i hear? You don't want the gays to go to hell, meaning to say they should stop being gay, right? We non-believers heard you, the gays heard you too, we're all going to burn in hell for eternity, so why do you make everyone elses lives hell in *this* life as well by constantly damning non-believers to hell and excluding non-believers from the human race?

See, that's the offensive thing, we non-believers, gay or not, see christians damning gays and non-believers arbitrarily to hell as offensive, not because your religion says so, the problem we have is that it is *YOU* that is not being a part of the human race for damning us to hell, *YOU* do not want to get along with everyone else, *YOU* are being rude and that has nothing at all to do with your fucked up religion from our point of view anyway.. but if that's what your religion says, then keep it to yourself, cunt face....

Just because you invoke the name Jesus, it doesn't give you the right to be a fucking arsehole, regardless of whether you are right or not

the religious should not read these blogs, they *will* be offended

these are my rantings about religion - i speak fluent sarcasm - know this when you are reading and it will save you some heartache.
